Building an Oyster Reef

45 volunteers with Tampa Bay Watch gathered at  Williams Park Boat Ramp, 8749 U.S. 41 in Riverview on Thursday morning 10/13/16  and began shoveling 30 tons fossilized shell into mesh bags.  The bags were then loaded onto boats and transported to Fantasy Island in the Hillsboro Bay part of Tampa Bay. Staff and volunteers then created a reef on the shore line of Fantasy Island to help stop erosion start the fill in of sediment behind the shell reef and promote the growth of oysters which will attach to the  oyster shell bags and create a  series of oyster reefs. The oyster are beneficial because they filter impurities out of the water. The project with will continue through Saturday.? SKIP O'ROURKE | Times
