Ditch the pills, grab a paddle

Treasure Island resident Mary Meyers, 83, was the official tour guide of a four-day, four-river tour in west-central Florida she organized for herself and half a dozen friends in November. The senior citizens, ages 67-88, meandered down the Weeki Wachee, Sante Fe, Withlacoochee and Rainbow Rivers. Meyers and two of them met on Elderhostel trips that have taken them paddling from the straights of San Juan de Fuca to the Bay of Fundy. Meyers gets some of her inspiration from Tampa Bay Times' late outdoors editor Terry Tomalin, who left a legacy to embrace fears, explore the wilds of Florida, and appreciate nature. "At this age, we have no fears... except for the nursing home,” said Meyers. LARA CERRI | TIMES
