Lifeguards gather for Surf Lifesaving Championships

The Clearwater Beach Patrol is hosting the 2014 James P. "Mac" McCarthy Memorial Regional Surf Lifesaving Championships on Thursday, July 17 and Friday, July 18 at Clearwater Beach and in Pier 60 Park. The two-day competition will bring approximately 200 lifeguard competitors from Florida, Alabama, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to compete on all methods of lifesaving skills. The competitions will include swimming, running, rowing, and paddling among many rescue techniques used by surf lifesaving professionals worldwide with the USLA Southeast Region awarding trophies in the following categories: 1st Place Overall Team, 2nd Place Overall Team, 3rd Place Overall Team, Individual Open Male High Points Score and Individual Open Female High Points. - The United States Lifesaving Association is America's nonprofit association of professional surf lifeguards who work to reduce the incidence of drowning through public education, national lifeguard standards, and promotion of lifeguard
