Joleen the manatee is readied for release into the waters of the TECO Manatee Viewing Area in Apollo Beach. Three endangered manatees were released into the wild on 1/16/14, after rehabilitation at the David A. Straz, Jr. Manatee Hospital at TampaÍs Lowry Park Zoo. The manatees -- nicknamed Lokey, Joleen and Longo -- arrived as orphans suffering from cold stress from prior winters. After 1-2 years of care and housing, the three animals were strong and ready to be return to Florida waters. Lokey is a young adult male manatee rescued from Longboat Key on Jan. 2, 2013. He weighed 248 pounds at the time of his rescue and recently weighed in at 725 pounds. He was the first manatee rescued in 2013 and the 300th patient to receive care at the ZooÍs manatee hospital.
