Three decades later, son of prominent criminal defense lawyer takes on his father’s 1983 murder case

In 1983, David Michaud was 15 years old when he and a friend broke into a Largo home, stole $400, and choked the 79-year-old man that confronted them. Fearing that Michaud could be executed, attorney Joseph McDermott advised his client to plead guilty to murder and burglary. He was sentenced to life prison. More than 30 years later, McDermott's son, Frank, has taken on his deceased father's case. He is asking judge Nancy Moate Ley to grant Michaud a resentencing under Florida's new juvenile sentencing guidelines. (Mar. 17, 2017) SCOTT KEELER | Times
