Two small pygmy killer whales stranded themselves offshore of Sand Key

Sea turtle nest monitors with the Clearwater Marine Aquarium saw two small pygmy killer whales swimming near the beach and another offshore on Sand Key and called for help. The aquariums stranding team came and with help from Clearwater Fire Rescue they held the whales in shallow water so their blowholes would stay out of the water while health assessments were done. After exams by biologists and the aquariums veterinarian the whales were carried to shore and loaded into a truck to be taken to Mote Marine in Sarasota for care. Aquarium members were keeping an eye on the whale that remained offshore. (August 29, 2018) Video: Jim Damaske, Editing: Tracee Stockwell, Tampa Bay Times
